Google Business Profile: The Free Hour That Beats a Month of Ads

Of everything a local Indian business can do online, completing a Google Business Profile properly has the best ratio of effort to result. It takes about an hour. It costs nothing. And for a small-city business it will frequently generate more calls than a ₹20,000 monthly ad budget.

Most profiles we audit are perhaps 40% complete. Here is the full walkthrough.

Step 1: Claim and verify

Go to google.com/business and search for your business first — a listing may already exist, auto-generated or created by a former employee. Claiming an existing listing preserves any reviews on it; creating a duplicate splits your reputation and can get both suspended.

Verification is usually by postcard to your registered address (5–14 days in India), sometimes by phone, email or video depending on category. For video verification, have your signage, premises and some business documentation ready to show.

Use a Google account that belongs to the business owner, not an agency, not an ex-employee's personal Gmail. Ownership disputes over listings are miserable and slow to resolve.

Step 2: The fields, in order of impact

Primary category

The single most influential field on the profile. Google uses it to decide which searches you are eligible for at all. Pick the most specific category that genuinely describes your main business, then add secondary categories for real additional services.

A useful check: search your main keyword, find the top three map results, and look at what categories they use. If they all use a category you have not selected, that is informative.

Business name

Your actual, legal, on-the-signage name. Nothing else. Adding keywords is a guideline violation, competitors can and do report it, and suspension is common. If your registered name genuinely contains a descriptor, that is fine — inventing one is not.

Address and service area

If customers come to you, enter the full address exactly as it appears on your website and every directory listing. If you travel to customers, use a service area instead and hide the address. Do not do both, and do not list an address you cannot prove you occupy.

Phone number

A local number outperforms a toll-free one for local trust. It must match your website exactly. If you use call tracking, put the tracking number as primary and your real number as secondary so the NAP match survives.

Hours

Accurate hours, plus special hours for Diwali, Holi and any local holidays you close for. “Open” when you are shut generates one-star reviews from people who drove to you, and Google demotes listings with a pattern of that.

Description

750 characters. Write for a customer deciding between you and two competitors, not for a crawler. State what you do, who you do it for, how long you have done it, and what makes choosing you a sensible decision. Keyword stuffing here does very little and reads badly to the human it is shown to.

Products and services

Heavily underused. List every service as a separate entry with a description and a price or price range. This populates directly into your listing, gives Google more relevance signals, and answers the price question buyers are silently asking.

Photos

Real photographs of your actual premises, team and work. Not stock images — they are recognisable and they undermine trust immediately. Aim for at least fifteen to start: exterior with signage, interior, team, work in progress, finished results, and your logo as the profile image.

Add a few new photos every month. Listings with recent photo activity perform measurably better than dormant ones.

Attributes

Wheelchair accessible, parking available, accepts UPI, women-led, appointment required. Some of these appear as filters in Google Maps, so ticking an accurate attribute can put you in a results set you would otherwise be excluded from.

Step 3: Reviews

Grab your review link from the profile dashboard, shorten it, and save it as a WhatsApp quick reply. Then actually ask — individually, by name, within a few days of good work, with the link in the message.

Target ten genuine reviews in the first month, then a steady trickle. Steady beats a sudden burst; twenty reviews appearing in one afternoon looks precisely as manufactured as it is.

Reply to all of them. For negative ones: acknowledge, do not argue, state what you have changed, and offer to continue offline. That reply is read by every future prospect, and a measured response often converts better than the complaint deters.

Step 4: Keep it alive

  • Posts: one a week — an offer, a completed project, a piece of news. They expire after seven days, so a stale profile shows nothing.
  • Q&A: seed it yourself with the ten questions customers actually ask, and answer them. You are permitted to do this, and if you do not, someone else will answer for you.
  • Messaging: enable it only if someone will genuinely reply quickly. Slow replies are worse than no messaging button.

Check your work: search your main service plus your locality in an incognito window on mobile. If you are not in the map pack, compare your listing side by side with the three that are — categories, review count, photo count, completeness. The gap is usually obvious and usually fixable.

Mistakes that get listings suspended

  • Keywords stuffed into the business name
  • A virtual office or residential address used to fake proximity
  • Multiple listings for the same business at the same address
  • Bought or incentivised reviews
  • A category wildly unrelated to what you actually do

Reinstatement after suspension takes weeks and sometimes fails entirely. Given how much a mature listing is worth, none of these shortcuts is a sensible risk.
