If your customers search with a city attached — “dentist in Kota”, “CA near me”, “coaching classes Dadabari” — then organic position one is not your target. The three business listings above the organic results are.
That block is called the map pack, and it takes the overwhelming majority of clicks on local searches. A business sitting first in the map pack and tenth in organic results will out-earn one that is first organically and absent from the map. Local SEO is largely the discipline of getting into those three slots.
What decides who appears
Google weighs three things, and they are not equally weighted for every query:
- Relevance. Does your listing's category, description and content match what was searched?
- Distance. How far is your registered address from the searcher, or from the place named in the query?
- Prominence. How well known is the business — reviews, citations, links, offline reputation?
Distance is the one people fight and cannot win. You will not rank in the map pack for a locality across the city from your office, no matter how good your SEO is. Accept the radius you can realistically serve, dominate it, and use organic pages and ads to reach beyond it.
The order to do things in
1. Google Business Profile, done properly
This is not a fifteen-minute task, and it is by far the highest-return work available. Every field completed, correct primary category, service areas, hours including holidays, real photographs, products or services listed with prices. We wrote a full field-by-field walkthrough because it deserves its own article.
2. Reviews, requested by name
Review count and recency are among the strongest prominence signals, and Indian businesses systematically under-collect them. The reason is almost always that nobody asks.
Ask every satisfied customer, individually, by name, with a direct link, within a few days of delivering good work. Do not buy reviews and do not write them yourself — Google is markedly better at detecting this than people assume, and a filtered listing is a worse position than the one you started from.
Reply to every review, including negative ones. A calm, specific reply to a complaint reads better to a prospective customer than the complaint reads badly.
3. NAP consistency across the web
Name, Address, Phone. These must be byte-identical everywhere they appear — your website, Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha, Facebook, industry directories. “H. No. 24” on one and “House No 24” on another is a genuine inconsistency to Google's matching.
Pick the exact format once, write it down, and use only that string forever.
4. Location and service pages that deserve to exist
If you serve several localities, a page per locality can work — but only if each page contains something genuinely specific: local landmarks, projects delivered there, area-specific pricing or logistics. Twenty pages that differ only by a swapped city name are doorway pages, and Google has been penalising them for years.
Better to have three substantial location pages than twenty thin ones.
5. Local citations and listings
In India the ones that carry weight are Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha, TradeIndia, and your relevant industry or trade association directory. These matter for two reasons: the NAP consistency signal, and the fact that they themselves rank for the terms your buyers search — so being listed puts you on page one twice.
The thing most local businesses get wrong
They optimise for the search term they wish people used, rather than the one people actually type. Business owners tend to search their own category name; customers search their problem.
A tax consultant thinks “chartered accountant in Kota”. Their customer types “GST return filing near me” or “how much does a CA charge for ITR”. Those are different pages with different content, and the second pair is where the enquiries are.
A free research method: read the last fifty enquiries you received on WhatsApp and note the exact words customers used to describe what they wanted. That is your keyword list, and it is more accurate than any tool because it comes from people who actually bought.
What to ignore
Keyword stuffing your business name. Renaming yourself “Best Plumber Kota Cheap 24x7” is against Google's guidelines, is reportable by competitors, and gets listings suspended. It also looks like exactly what it is.
Bulk citation packages. A hundred listings on directories nobody visits is not prominence. Ten listings on sites your customers actually use is.
Fake addresses in other cities. Virtual offices and residential addresses used to game proximity are the fastest route to a permanent suspension, and losing an established listing is far more expensive than never having ranked in that area.
A realistic timeline
Local SEO moves faster than national SEO. A properly completed Google Business Profile with ten genuine reviews can change a small-city business's phone volume within four to six weeks. Competitive urban categories take three to six months. Either way it is the cheapest customer acquisition available to a local business, and most of the work is free.
